Traditionally, mathematics is seen as a subject rooted in formulas and problem-solving. Debating about mathematical concepts was a novel experience for the students, one that significantly enriched their understanding and application of the subject. The process encouraged them to explore mathematics beyond numbers and equations, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for its role in real-life contexts. Many students noted that this experience made mathematics feel more engaging and relatable, breaking the stereotype of it being purely technical.
Here are some of the responses in their own words:
Aryan Das, Grade 6
“I had an amazing experience while taking part in the maths debate league organized by Unmath school. I learned how mathematics is integrated in every sector of our daily life helping us do various tasks. Before i participated in the maths debate league i used to think maths was just calculations but now i think maths can also be concepts in our daily life. I would like to thank Euro School Chhauni,my teachers, friends and family members as well as Unmath school for supporting me and giving me a platform to share my opinions.
Aaradhyan Pandey, Grade 6
“So it was a very tough and strong competition, competing among one of the best schools in Nepal. I am proud I got to go to the end of the screening round and progress through a more tougher round, the regional round. This type of achievement is a lot for me. The 3 days period was very important and interesting to me and my team, getting to learn a lot of topics.”
